Notes from the Vestry Meeting of November 16th, 2008

The Vestry of Ascension Episcopal Church met at 9:30 AM in the basement of the Church.  Present were Kent and Gail H., Joann D., Logan S., John V., Myra Z. and Cleo M..  As Nancy was attending an ETS meeting, Kent acting as chair, called the meeting to order.

Logan led Bible Reflection.

Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as presented.

Treasurer’s report was reviewed and filed for audit.  It was resolved that Myra was authorized to reinvest CD for a period of 1 year at best rate attainable.

Old business:

  • Signs - John reported that 2 highway signs had been ordered and that he would see that they were installed.
  • Bishop Mike is scheduled to visit Ascension on December 14 and there will be a vestry meeting.  Church members need to plan special coffee hour.
  • December 6th is date for retreat at St Stephens in Beckley.  9:30 – 4:00.  Ministry team of Joann, Darrell & Nancy and Abby will need to attend and others are invited if they wish.
  • Convention report:  Ascension was recognized for its Free Books for Kids program and won for its bulletin design.
  • Joann reported that 960 books had been distributed during Railroad Days.  She is working on getting a committee to help purchase some new books for this program with the $500 in grant monies that have been received from the Diocese.  Kent suggested that that it might be useful to have a stamp created so that each book could be stamped with something like “Free book from Ascension Episcopal Church.  When you have finished reading it, please give it to someone else to read and enjoy”.  This might help prevent people from taking the books for the purpose of reselling them.
  • Christmas Parade is scheduled for December 13.  No decision was made as to whether Ascension wanted to enter the Parade or have a Free Books giveaway in conjunction with this event.
  • Options for helping in community during this time of economic hardship were discussed.  Cleo offered to check on Food Pantry situation in Presbyterian and Good Shepherd Churches to see if they need some donations of food with the idea that Ascension members could donate.
  • Brochure:  Logan reported he had an outline done for the brochure but was having some difficulty importing pictures.  Kent offered to help work with him on solving that problem.

New business:

Kent noted that Church members needed to be thinking about whom to elect to the vestry.  He will announce whose term is up from pulpit.

Meeting adjourned with prayer at 10:37.
